MY RATING: 5 STARS
A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.
Air Awakens was that book that everyone talked about on Twitter and I sat there like a duck not knowing what the heck was going on. I finally read it and it was fantastic. Pretty broad word right there, so this review is going to go in depth. *puts on serious face* Real in depth…
Our main character Vhalla is a strong independent character with a fiery personality. Though at times she could be seen as almost pathetic, her character is still well rounded and unique. Reading about Vhalla grow into her air abilities was fascinating to watch. Well, not literally…but you get what I mean. Though Vhalla does undergo the trope of ‘typical commoner girl gets special powers that make her a chosen one’ I felt Kova wrote Vhalla well enough that it was entertaining and genuinely good. The love interest of the story is Aldrik. *sigh* Aldrik is the cold hearted Crown Prince, definitely the dark sexy type. *cackles manically* Aldrik is also a sorcerer, he has fire abilities, an alias of his is the Fire Lord. Sounds pretty dark and mysterious huh? Aldrik was also well developed, I always was excited to see what would happen between Vhalla and Aldrik and the tension they would create.
The world of Air Awakens isn’t mind blowing fantastic. But it wasn’t bad either. Many of the lands mentioned were briefly described, but I really wish that they had been described even more. Though the world building wasn’t perfect, it was still well written and I could easily imagine myself within it.
Moving to the plot, the plot of Air Awakens was perfectly paced. I found that everything was written in such a way that I as the reader had an idea of what would happen next, but was still surprised. Kova definitely had me gasping out loud in shock at everything that was happening. The plot of Air Awakens is the type of plot that keeps you up at night, it kept me up at night for sure! The plot was evenly paced, there were moments when nothing much was happening, but at the same time, Kova kept the plot interesting enough to keep reading.
Overall, I loved this book. This book was absolutely amazing. Everything about it was amazing. I highly recommend it to people who love any type of fantasy. Hope you enjoyed this review! Have you read Air Awakens? If so, did you enjoy it? If not, have I convinced you to try it out?
